Craigslist now requiring broker registration

Craigslist in the Seattle/Tacoma area is now asking for real estate brokers to register before being able to post ads on the site. Is this the first step before charging brokers for the ads? It could be that the party will soon be over, as Craig expands his pay ads from New York to other areas of the country. Though I will be very sad, it could be that these ads will become more useful as there are always idiots out there who spam the classifieds with their “No Down Payment” ads over and over again. If you start charging them a few bucks for the ads, they’ll think twice before putting their sometimes bogus, but always lame, no-photo ads online.

Oh my gosh, this is sad, but I completely agree with you – it might bring back some quality to the posts there?
I really doubt they will charge brokers for any basic listing. Registration can help for two reasons, 1. premium listings, and 2. avoiding spam.

Marlow – It was nice to meet you at the annual Washington State Association of Realtors Education Conference. I wrote a post today on my blog about the event and also talked a little bit about your real estate blogging. Take care Marlow and I’ll try to stop in more often here and add some comments as well.
While I can’t speak for craigslist, I did see Craig Newmark speak at the Inman conference in July. He didn’t express any desire to charge for real estate listings, but said that combatting spam was their “top priority”. I’m hoping that it is simply an anti-spam measure.
We do french property sales and I keep looking at craigslist but always doubt whether people actually look there to buy property.
Do they? Does anyone have a success story?
Katie
My clients are most successful with Craigslist for rentals. The sales ads are often deceptive in how they are presented and most clients regard them with suspicion, at least here in Miami.
