Authorities said today they found two handguns with the badly decomposed bodies of five family members who were discovered in a home in a wealthy, gated Orange County community over the holiday weekend.
The house where the family was found was worth about $1.7 million, according to the real estate Web site Zillow.com.
It appears that Zillow’s becoming the official reference site for property values in the Los Angeles Times.

The quote you referenced is not in the article that you link to. Perhaps it has since been (rightly) removed from the article?

Oh yeah, you’re right. That’s weird.
But it’s still on MSNBC here:

I have always thought that gated communities provide a false sense of security. Keeping your personal alert system in good working order is an important part of living safely in today’s world.
My sympathies to the family of the victims. The circumstances itself are disturbing, not to mention the loss of the loved ones.

My experience is that Zillow has good market analysis if you are looking for ball park numbers. The problem is they have no way of knowing upgrades in a home, landscaping, etc.
Many times people make upgrades to their homes even add square footage and they do not tell the County because then their taxes will increase.

That’s just terrible.
Everything about it.
