Oh, that would be horrible! There's a tree on my property that must be over 100 years old, it would be so sad to lose our trees in our neighborhoods here.....

And how interesting about John L. Scott... I'm speaking at a conference with his grandson at the end of the month in San Fransisco:

From the following article:

http://www.arthurleej.com/a-pioneering.html

"The American and English elms and green ashes planted on 34th, 36th, and 37th Avenues East between East Madison and East Mercer Streets were planted by realtor John L. Scott to lure prospective home buyers to buy his lots and build residential homes. This is one of the earliest examples we know of in Seattle where street trees were used to landscape a subdivision."

The other "disaster" that hit Detroit and greatly effected neighborhoods, the people and home values even:

http://info.detnews.com/history/story/index.cfm?id=9&category=life

I often visited my grandparents in Detroit in the early 70's when their streets still had their Elms and one summer when I went back, it was all gone. Nothing left but the distant sounds of chainsaws throughout entire days.

Imagine something like this happening here. Cap Hill, Queen Anne, Madison Park for example- what a huge impact it would have on the area and morale of the people that live there.

The property taxes on Jack's former Detroit home are about $20,000 per year. Would any rational person pay that much in property taxes if the home was only worth about the same? Not likely. That precipitous fall in value does not reflect what is actually happening in Detroit, just a faulty AVM at Zillow.

Great article, I was unfamiliar with the story but it was quite interesting, and I didn't realize Zillow could be that inaccurate.

Zillow's still a baby. As the popularity grows, and more people add their values, I think it will become more and more accurate. I'm also happy to see Yahoo giving the trifecta of home values - giving an even better idea of value.
