Randy - It has been getting more and more popular indeed. I've seen MULTIPLE designs now utilizing cargo containers, some that have even created dual stories as a result of a little innovation. The 7 foot ceilings would get a little irritating though and I'm not sure how'd you get around that.

Our self storage business has been using freight containers as storage units for over twenty years now. I have been very interested in building a house out of some cargo containers for several years now. Their modular design, strength and availability are obvious reasons, but I wonder how difficult it is to get around the fact that ceiling height is around 7 feet 10 inches and energy transmission of the metal can cause an insulation challenge.
